The crash happened Sunday in an unincorporated area of Placer County near Roseville around 1:50 a.m. All three men were pronounced dead at the scene. A 2008 BMW overturned several times on the south shoulder of Vineyard Road, according to a CHP news release Sunday. The preliminary investigation revealed the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and left the main traveled portion of the roadway when it crashed into a power pole. This impact caused the driver to lose control and overturned several times,

It’s unclear if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. Detectives are waiting for toxicology reports to come back, and the cause of the crash is still under investigation.

A 3.2-magnitude earthquake shook Southern California as it hit off the coast, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The nearly 7-mile deep quake struck off the coast of Ventura County about 12 miles northwest of Oxnard at 1:24 p.m. Tuesday, May 30. The epicenter was just offshore of Point Mugu. More than 150 people from as far away as Santa Barbara and Hermosa Beach reported feeling the tremor to the agency. aJust had a quick jolt in Ventura County,a one Twitter user shared. Magnitude measures the energy released at the source of the earthquake, the U.S. Geological Survey says. It replaces the old Richter scale. Quakes between 2.5 and 5.4 magnitude are often felt but rarely cause much damage, according to Michigan Tech. Quakes below 2.5 magnitude are seldom felt by most people. Earthquakesa sudden, rapid shaking can cause fires, tsunamis, landslides or avalanches. They can happen anywhere, but theyare most common in Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Puerto Rico, and Washington, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Placer County has completed the cleanup of the abandoned homeless area at F and 1st street at the Dewitt center in North Auburn this past week. The area has been available to homeless people who have moved out or moved to the new camp area across the street under the operation of the Placer County Probation department. The county was required to maintain access to former homeless people who had established living at the former location for 90 days since it was closed to habitation in February. Terry Butrym, liability manager for Placer County released a video on the county operation that started to clean the area and has now returned it to open space, available to the county for re-use. Traffic between Taylor Road and the I-80 intersection on Penryn Road was closed for several hours. Placer County Sheriffs are investigating. Additional information will be released later.

The American River is expected to be even more dangerous this week due to a larger amount of water being released from Folsom Lake. Waterways have already been flowing faster than usual due to Californiaas record snowfall melting, sending more water down the stateas waterways, prompting warnings from Northern California officials. With the releases increased to 15,000 cubic feet per second Monday and Tuesday, Sacramento Regional Parks is warning people to not enter the American River.

The Placer County Sheriffas Office confirmed a body was found in Folsom Lake near Rattlesnake Bar on Friday.

Angela Musallam, public information officer for the Placer County Sheriffas Office, said the call reporting the body was received mid-morning on Friday.

One individual went missing on April 29 after he visited the American River. The second went missing on May 14 after he was recreating on the river. The Placer County Sheriffas Office confirmed a body was found in Folsom Lake near Rattlesnake Bar on Friday.

Placer Coroner officials have confirmed that the body found Friday at Folsom Lake is that of a 22-year-old man who was swept into the American River more than two weeks earlier near the confluence in Placer County. The victim has been identified as Victor Nguyen of Antelope, the Placer County Sheriffas Office said in a Monday social media post.

Deputies on April 29 were dispatched to the confluence of the Middle Fork and North Fork of the American River, near Auburn, where a group of friends reported one person in their group had been swept away in the water.

Reprint from Auburn Journal:

Despite bad weather and red tape delays, the Loomis Costco construction remains on schedule for an early fall opening on Sierra College Boulevard.

After tree removal in April on the 17-acre lot at Brace Road, Loomis town officials recently issued a grading permit for preliminary ground work around the proposed 155,000 square-foot Costco building.

“They’re still moving forward as quickly as possible. They want to hit the holiday season sales and they’re doing everything they can to get there,” said Loomis Town Manager Sean Rabe at the May 9 Town Council meeting.

A final back-check to Costcoas plan is under review, and approval of the on-site storm drain grading and right-of-way frontage improvements should be issued this week or next, said Loomis town engineer Merrill Buck.

To help mitigate the potential for flooding, state law requires stormwater storage “metered out” no greater than historical 10-year storms.

“When you go from fields to a parking lot, thereas a lot more runoff water that needs to be stored as the field is no longer absorbing the water,” Buck explained.

Work will include widening Sierra College Boulevard within the town limits for additional right-turn lanes and a new signalized intersection on the stretch between Brace Road and Granite Drive.

Buck said in early May that right-of-way frontage work is still “several months out” from starting, as PG&E undergrounding work will first have to be completed.

“PG&E has been great to work with as we coordinate with Costco and should have their contractor starting the underground work by June,” Buck said.

Since 2018, the town of Loomis and city of Rocklin have legally sparred toward an agreement on the new Costco on the border between the two communities.

Costco bought the 17 acres on the southeast corner of Sierra College Boulevard and Brace Road in Loomis for $4.75-million in 2019.

Approved by the Loomis Town Council in 2020, the two jurisdictions finally struck a deal last fall, minus a 24-pump Costco gas station and tire center. Costco agreed to pay Rocklin $3.75 million for traffic impacts.

Loomis is expected to collect $1.2-million in annual sales tax revenue from the new store, making Costco one of the largest sales tax sources in the townas history.

Sunny and clear skies dominate the rest of the week. Highs climb Thursday and Friday into the 80as and 90as delivering a weekend Saturday and Sunday in the mid 90as.

-0-

In the wake of another deadly mass shooting in the United States, California Governor Gavin Newsom took to social media this weekend to call out Republicans who he believes have stood idly by as lives continue be lost at the hands of armed gunmen.

Gov. Newsom wrote on Twitter aThis is freedom?? To be shot at a mall? Shot at school? Shot at church? Shot at the movies? We have become a nation that is more focused on the right to kill than the right to live,a.

The comments were made in the hours following a mass shooting at an outlet mall in Allen, Texas, in which a gunman opened fire at shoppers, killing eight and wounding seven more. The gunman, 33-year-old Mauricio Garcia, was killed by an officer who was at the mall on an unrelated call. Investigators said Garcia used an AR-style rifle in the Dallas suburb shooting and was also believed to have interacted with neo-Nazi and white supremacist posts on social media.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott called the massacre an aunspeakable tragedy,a adding that local officials had the complete support of the stateas law enforcement and investigative resources.

An amendment to Californiaas constitution that would allow 17-year-olds to vote has been proposed in the state Senate.

In February, California Senator Henry Stern (D-Los Angeles) introduced SCA 2, which would lower the voting age from 18 to 17. The California Association of Student Councils said it also supported the measure. aResearch demonstrates that voting is habitualaif someone votes in the first
election for which they are eligible, they are far more likely to continue voting
throughout their lifetimes,a the group said.

The Election Integrity Project California filed a comment opposing the bill saying 17-year-olds lacked the maturity and life experience to vote. Efforts to lower the voting age in California go back at least as far as 1995. Most recently, Assemblymember Evan Low (D-Silicon Valley) proposed lowering the voting age to 17 in 2017 and 2019. The 2019 attempt got through the State Assembly before dying in committee in the Senate.

After weeks of being flooded, Discovery Park is now afully open,a the Sacramento County Regional Parks Department announced Monday.

In April, only Discovery Parkas western portion a the boat launch and parking areas west of Interstate 5 a was open to the public. At the time, the eastern portion of Discovery Park was closed for maintenance crews to acontinue working to prepare the park.a

With the full reopening of Discovery Park, county park officials said the Elkhorn Boat Launch and its parking lot remain closed auntil further notice.a The boat launch is about 11 miles north of Discovery Park.

The Auburn State Theatre has begun repair work on the auditorium interior this week to stabilize the room environment. Initial assessments were done by the city of Auburnas building inspector and private contractors. Planning is underway to determine the full scope of the repair work and restoration action that needs to be taken.A As previously reported April 19th, the historic State Theatre in Auburn, CA. had to temporarily close to the public and address interior building damage after ceiling cracks were noticed. Initially a large section of the auditorium ceiling plaster and framework came down the morning of April 18th, triggering a fire alarm system in the empty auditorium which triggered a multi-fire engine and crew response.

During the assessment process and due to the age of the Auburn state theatre, an environmental contractor was retained to do asbestos testing which returned a positive result, showing asbestos in the ceiling debris samples.

The first phase of repair, starting yesterday, will be the environmental contractor to secure and close off the auditorium and finalize a plan of action for the abatement and remediation for the auditorium area.

Work is being done in the critical barrier area which encompasses only the Theatre auditorium. This temporary closure of the State Theatre auditorium does not affect the Auburn state theater on-site offices or other businesses in the multi-use complex. Additionally, the exterior building roof is intact, did not collapse or sustain any damage.

The Auburn state theatre board of directors president Chris Walsh stated: awe want to thank our patrons, volunteers, performers, employees, tenants, and the community, for the outpouring of support. We will keep you appraised as we move forward with caring for the beloved theater, with a full slate of performances scheduled for 2023. Auburn state theatre is working as quickly as possible to reopen but emphasizing safety and proper historical restoration to ensure the auditorium will be a staple in the community for decades to come. Several State Theatre events will continue as repairs are undertaken, including the Big Day of giving on May 4th; Auburn Vintage Home Tour, May 7th, and the annual street party fundraiser, Cocktails and Cinema on June 3rd.

All indoor performances scheduled for the state theatre auditorium through the end of July are being rescheduled or relocated to other venues, when possible. Updated event information is available at theauburnstatetheatre.org. All patrons and ticket holders can transfer ticket dates, receive a refund or convert their purchases to a donation. an e-mail with events specific information and is what to do next will be sent to those purchased online all others may visit the Theatre box office in person or call 530-885-0156.

Remember BIG DAY OF GIVING May 4th.

Alarms sounded shortly after 6:00 a.m. inside the Auburn, California Theatre this morning with three Auburn Fire Crews responding to find the main Auditorium full of a thick cloud of dust and debris. Located at 985 Lincoln Way in downtown Auburn California, also referred to as The Auburn Placer Performing Center. The Theatre was built in 1930 by T & D Jr. Enterprises, a San Francisco-based theatre management firm. The original theatre, reported to have been built at a cost of roughly $100,000, was designed by J. Lloyd Conrich, a San Francisco-based architect who also designed the Cascade Theater in Redding, the Sierra Theatre in Grass Valley and many others. Originally, the Theatre offered seating for more than 1,300, including seats located on a balcony, reached by the two sets of stairs in the Theatreas current foyer.

In the late 1990s, Auburn Placer Performing Arts Center (APPAC) was established as a non-profit organization. APPAC purchased the Theatre property in 2006. Two years later, Project Auburn, under APPAC and the members of the Theatre Restoration Committee, the Auburn Rotary Club, local contractors and generous community supporters, the Theatreas faAade was reconstructed to replicate the original and gifted with a new replica of the original aSTATEa blade and marquee.

In 2009 one of the two small movie theatres was transformed into a 130-seat performing arts venue. Three years later, a $200,000 roof was installed and APPAC launched the aTear Down the Wall Bring Up the Artsa campaign. By 2014 the Theatre reopened as the single-room, 350-seat theatre you see today and in 2019 officially began operating as Auburn State Theatre.

More information and photos of the Auburn State Theatre and complete history is available at www.auburnstatetheatre.org. Additional information about what the next step by the owners will be is expected to be released in a few hours.

Northern Californiaas largest utility company, Pacific Gas and Electric Co., and its two Southern California counterparts are seeking to restructure how their residential electric customers are billed, potentially reducing costs for lower-income households while resulting in higher-income customers paying more.

Their proposal, filed this week with the California Public Utilities Commission, is a response to a new state law that changed the requirements for how public utilities charge customers, PG&E said.
