In keeping with the tradition since its inception, California’s governor attended the Host Breakfast to give an address on the state of the state. Governor Jerry Brown has given that address during both his terms in office, and this year was no exception. Since this was his last speech as governor, Brown took the audience back in time during his first term in office 1975-1983. According to the Mr. Brown, the gross revenue in 1975 was $175 billion. Today that amount is $2.7 trillion with California being representing the world’s 5th largest economy. A A

A A Brown proudly recalled his great-grandfather came to the state in 1849 from Germany on what the governor called aThe Good Ship Perseverance.a From those beginnings, Brown claimed the same forward looking attitude and follow-through of his ancestors in all four terms as in the state’s highest office. Brown made lots of humorous remarks about how he was treated at the beginning of his first term in the governor’s office, but stressed the importance that California never stand still. aCalifornia is not a museuma he said, but a avibrant living place.a Brown touted 150 years of forward thinking and never pulling back. He was proud that a dream, brains, willpower and courage built California. Even though he is in his last term, he remains a visionary who claims we have so much more to accomplish.

A A A A Clean energy, cyclical revenue, infrastructure and climate concerns were also mentioned, as well as his concern the divided country we have become. But Brown hoped that, aalthough a divided Washington might or might not get it right, it is his hope that California will.a

A A A A And so Governor Jerry Brownas term is coming to an end, and yet, his hope is new visionaries will continue to make California great. The Honorable Governor Jerry Brown is the only living former Governor of California who was elected to two terms before term limits were enacted in 1990. By the way, the Governor is the oldest and youngest California Governor. Just a little trivia for your next cocktail party.A
